Aristotle's Wisdom and TWO Domains to Master to Experience Fulfilling Relationships For Clincians And The General Public - Space is Limited March 4th, 2010 Thursday, 12-1 EST 1. Cease Personalizing the Impersonal We all possess underdeveloped areas within our psyches. We all face the ongoing challenge of choosing how to live the most fulfilling life we can in accord with our values. None are immune to moments of anger, frustration and conflict. And, all of us have primitive brains. That’s just the short list! Taking any or all of the above impersonal difficulties of human life personally is a recipe for unhappiness in our relationships, yet couples do so all the time. One distinguishing characteristic of loving, healthy couples is their capacity to cease from personalizing the impersonal. We will explore where most of us get tripped up and how to avoid this…. 2. Seek to Realize Aristotle’s Highest Form of Friendship Marriage and relationship theorists agree that one of the central characteristics of a healthy, intimate relationship is friendship. Yet couples often get stuck in two lower classes of friendship described centuries ago by Aristotle – their union is rooted in transitory pleasure, or is based predominantly on utility and usefulness. In other words, class one and two is summed up in the question, what’s in it for me? The third class of friendship known as “teleiaphilia,” meaning “completed” or “perfected,” includes pleasure and mutual usefulness, yet is ultimately based on entirely different principles. We’ll explore how we might unknowingly slip into the first or second class of friendship, how to avoid this, and then discuss 9 transformative principles designed to help realize a perfect or complete friendship with the one we hold most dear.
